What happens when you call
People hesitate to call a number on a website because they do not know who picks up or what it will turn into. Here is the whole of it.
- A person answers, not a menu. You will not be asked to enter anything on the keypad before speaking to somebody.
- The person who answers is a licensed independent insurance agent. Independent means the agent is appointed with several insurance companies rather than employed by one, and is not employed by Life Policy Desk either.
- You describe the situation and ask your questions. A letter you do not understand, a premium that changed, a beneficiary you want to update, a policy you think a parent may have left behind. The agent works from what is actually written in the policy rather than from the general case.
- Nothing is sold on the call unless you ask for it. If you want a policy priced or an application started, say so and the agent can do that. If you do not, the conversation ends with your questions answered and nothing bought.
- There is no cost to you, and no bill afterwards. Neither the guides nor the call are charged for. Life Policy Desk is paid by the independent agents it connects callers with, never by the caller.
- You can end the call whenever you like. Hang up, say you want to think about it, or ask to be left alone. No one will press you, and you do not owe an explanation.
Life Policy Desk is not an insurance company and not an insurance agency. We write and publish the guides on this site, in plain English, for people holding a bill or a letter about a policy they already own. We do not sell insurance and we hold no insurance license. When you call, you are connected with a licensed independent insurance agent, and the agent is the one who can read your actual policy, tell you what its provisions say and go through the numbers with you. Because that agent works for no single insurance company, there is no one product waiting at the end of the conversation that the answer has to arrive at.
Common reasons people call
Almost nobody calls because they want to buy something. They call because a piece of paper arrived and it is not clear what it means.
- A premium went up, or a letter says it is about to. What causes an increase depends on the type of policy, and the answer is in the contract rather than in the letter.
- A payment failed. A new bank, a replaced card, or one tight month, and then a notice that reads like junk mail but is not.
- A lapse notice. Many contracts allow a lapsed policy to be put back in force under stated conditions, and what that takes depends on the contract and on how long it has been.
- The wrong person is named as beneficiary. A designation filled in decades ago, before a divorce, a death, or a grandchild. A will does not override it.
- A parent has died and nobody can find the policy. Sometimes there is only a bank record, or a name half remembered.
- The policy no longer matches why it was bought. The mortgage is gone, the household has changed, or the monthly amount has started to feel heavy.
- A term policy is ending. There is usually a decision with a deadline attached, and the good options tend to expire before the coverage does.
Questions people ask
Is this free?
Yes. The guides are free to read and the call costs nothing. There is no membership, no fee and no invoice later. If anyone ever asks you to pay Life Policy Desk for help with your policy, it is not us.
Are you an insurance company?
No. Life Policy Desk is a trade name of Aliança Marketing LLC, a Georgia company that publishes these guides. We do not issue policies, we do not sell insurance, and we hold no insurance license. If your question is about the contract itself, the licensed independent agent is the person who can answer it.
Will someone try to sell me something?
You will not be pushed into anything, and you can ask your questions and hang up. Being straight about it: the agent who answers is licensed to sell insurance and is paid when someone chooses to buy, and we are paid by the agents. So there is a business behind the free call. What that means in practice is that the agent will answer what you asked, and will only price or propose something if you ask for it. Often the sensible outcome is to leave the policy exactly as it is, and an independent agent loses nothing by saying so.
Do you work for my insurance company?
No, and neither does the agent. We have no relationship with the company that issued your policy, we cannot see your file and we cannot make changes on your behalf. Anything official, a beneficiary change or a reinstatement, has to go through your insurance company on its own forms. The agent can tell you what to ask for and what a proper answer looks like.
What if I do not have my paperwork?
Call anyway. The full legal name of the person insured and a rough year of purchase is often enough to figure out what to ask for and in what order. Nobody needs your Social Security number to answer a general question about how something works, and this site will never ask you for one.
